Argyll is a beautiful and unspoilt part of Scotland with an ancient story to tell reaching back into prehistory. It has a huge range of things to do, sights to see and places to go, from the spectacle of busy fishing and yachting centres like Crinan and Tarbert to the shops, cafes and local activity of towns such as Oban and Lochgilphead.  The village of Ardfern has long had a reputation as the 'left bank of Argyll' and is home to an eclectic mix of engaging locals, 'white settlers' and ageing hippies!

Exploring

Historical Argyll Celtic cross Argyll is the ancient homeland of the original 'Scots' whose leader, Kenneth McAplin, came over from Northern Ireland to claim the kingdom of Dalriada as his own.  It therefore has a unique place in Scottish history and there are many sites of historical and archaeological interest in the area, including pre-historic stone circles of awesome mystery.  The sixth-century hill fort of Dunadd rises majestically from the Moine Mhor (Great Moss), which is also a National Nature Reserve with hen harriers, curlews, dragonflies and myriad bog life. The government agency Historic Scotland provides access and interpretation to many, and there is a relatively new award-winning museum and archaeology centre at Kilmartin House in the important Kilmartin Glen, just south of Ardfern, which is rapidly becoming an unmissable attraction for visitors.

Oban Area

As the epicentre of Argyll holidaymaking, the Oban area is particularly well served with visitor attractions, places to eat and interesting shopping. (Not to mention websites)  It is also the best place for basic provisions as it has a large and well-stocked Tesco store open 7 days a week. Oban is known as the 'Gateway to the Isles' because of the many ferry routes and daily boat trips which originate in the small port. Mull is an easy day trip from the cottages and has many popular visitor attractions such as Duart Castle, a narrow gauge steam railway, a unique 'Little Theatre', a distillery and much more.  And, of course, you could always visit Balamory (Tobermory), home of the BBC's acclaimed TV programme and fun to explore for teenies, tweenies and even oldies!  A bit further south, Iona is famous for its Abbey and religious community, but you may need an overnight stay to do it justice.

Eating out

There are many places to eat within a few miles, from good pub grub to fine restaurants specialising in the local seafood, including the Loch Melfort Hotel just five minutes away, the Waterfront Restaurant in Oban and, of course, the renowned Crinan Hotel.  Other ideas are given in a list of Our Recommendations available in the cottages.

Oban Bay

Activities

Argyll is also ideal walking, golfing and fishing country and is renowned for many fine and special gardens. Kids and adults alike seem to love the Sea.fari boat trips round the islands - a cross between a wildlife tour and a funfair ride! Because the coast is so spectacular, the 'interior' of Mid Argyll, around Loch Awe, is often overlooked despite offering wonderful countryside and holiday activities.  Much of the landscape is forested at lower levels, and this offers a wide variety of forest walks within easy reach.  There is good loch and river fishing from Loch Awe in the north all the way down to the southern tip of Kintyre.  Oban and Lorn Angling Club also do a Guide to the Lochs nearby. And there are eight different golf courses to the north and nine to the south.

There is even a Poultry and Waterfowl Park for those with a particular interest in domestic birds! Many famous areas of Scotland are easily within reach of a day out, including Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Kintyre and Campbeltown.

Inverary ViewAnd although the weather is not always perfect, come rain or shine, you should be able to find so many things to do that you have to come back next year to complete the list!

Ardfern is situated on the sheltered coast of the Craignish Peninsula. This is a ten mile promontory stretching out into the islands of the Inner Hebrides from the coastal road where Mid-Argyll meets Lorne. The country here is some of the most beautiful in Scotland, and some of its least discovered. The shoreline is rugged, craggy, indented, but not without its gentle coves and beaches - as well as many islands where seals bask and sea birds nest, and where a careful observer may see both eagles and otters. Above the shoreline the land is lush and undulating, with many remaining fragments of the Caledonian Forest giving shelter amidst oaks and pines to a great diversity of animals and wild flowers.

Ardfern has its own pub, the Galley of Lorne, just a few steps from the cottage, which serves food seven days a week. Right beside it is the Crafty Kitchen, a café and craft shop in one.

The double-bedded master bedroom is upstairs, with a very comfortable king size 5ft bed and duvet, and an en-suite bathroom with bath/shower.  The second bedroom is on the ground floor and has twin beds and plenty of storage space. There is also a family bathroom downstairs, with a shower installed over the bath. Bath and hand towels for each guest, duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases are all provided at no extra cost. A cot is available if requested, but this does not have linen as most guests prefer to bring their own.

Cleanliness and Comfort

The cottages are cleaned and cared for personally by Alison Hampton and Matthew Haggis.  We pride ourselves on making sure that it is spotlessly clean and that everything is well maintained and working.  We believe that only by doing it ourselves can we ensure that the cottage consistently meets our high standards.  The cottage is centrally heated by oil-fired underfloor heating with optional timer function. Therefore the open fire is not needed to keep you warm, and is really there to provide the unique comforting glow that only natural embers can. Coal for the fire, oil and all electricity is provided at no extra cost.

Sula Cottage is a no smoking cottage.

Getting There

Click here for large map of the area Ardfern is easy to find (click here or on the map to the left or click here for a Google Map), and is about 15 minutes from Craobh Haven, on the south side of the Craignish peninsular.  It is south of the well-known town of Oban, about half way between Oban and Lochgilphead, just over two hours drive from Glasgow via the A82 and A83, about 15 miles north of Lochgilphead on the A816.

For SatNav users, the postcode is PA31 8QN.  We send detailed directions to the cottage on confirmation of booking.

The nearest railway station is in Oban, about 25 miles north, but unfortunately trains from Glasgow are fairly infrequent. Oban is also the main port for Mull and the Islands where you can get ferries to visit Mull, Iona, Colonsay and other islands as day trips or for overnight stays. They also do sightseeing cruises.

The bus from Glasgow stops in Lochgilphead before turning south to Campbeltown. A separate service leaves Lochgilphead in the morning calling in to Craobh Haven on its way to Oban and returning in the afternoon.
